Deleting old Windows backups with wbadmin

I had set up the built-in Windows 7 backup utility to run on my mother-in-law's Windows 10 PC to back up the computer's internal hard disk drive (HDD) to an external USB drive. She asked me to verify that the backup was still functioning, so I checked the status of the backup process on her Windows 10 (version 1709) system using the wbadmin command by opening a command prompt window with administrator access to run the wbadmin get versions command to obtain a list of all the backups. I found that the last backup had occurred on December 31, 2017.

Since there was only about 7 MB of space left on the 2 TB Seagate external USB drive I was using to store the backups, there was no room for new backups and there apparently hadn't been enough room to hold a new backup since December 31, 2017.

Seagate Drive K full

Since the backup drive was full, I needed to delete some old backups to make room for new ones. You can delete backups with the wbadmin command. The syntax for using a delete command is shown below.

syntax below.

Syntax: WBADMIN DELETE BACKUP
  {-keepVersions:<No. of copies> | -version:<VersionIdentifier> | -deleteOldest}
  [-backupTarget:<VolumeName>]
  [-machine:<BackupMachineName>]
  [-quiet]

Description: Deletes the backups that you specify. If the
specified volume contains backups other than backups of the local
server, those backups will not be deleted.
To use this command, you must be a member of the Backup Operators group
or Administrators group.

Parameters:
-keepVersions Specifies the number of the latest backups to
keep. The value must be a positive integer. The option value
                -keepVersions:0 deletes all the backups.

-version Version identifier of the backup in MM/DD/YYYY-HH:MM format.
If you do not know the version identifier, at a command
prompt, type: WBADMIN GET VERSIONS. Versions that are
exclusively backups can be deleted using this
command. Use WBADMIN GET ITEMS to view the version type.

-deleteOldest Deletes the oldest backup.

-backupTarget Specifies the storage location for the backup that you want
to delete. The storage location for backups is a
drive letter, a mount point, or a GUID-based volume path. This
value only needs to be specified for locating backups that are
not of the local computer. Information about backups for the
local computer will be available in the backup catalog on the
                local computer.

-machine Specifies the computer whose backup you want to
delete. Useful when multiple computers were backed up to
the same location. Should be used when -backupTarget is
                specified.

-quiet Runs the command with no prompts to the user.

Remarks: One, and only one, of these parameters must be specified:
-keepVersions, -version, or -deleteOldest.

Examples:
WBADMIN DELETE BACKUP -version:03/31/2006-10:00
WBADMIN DELETE BACKUP -keepVersions:3
WBADMIN DELETE BACKUP -backupTarget:f: -deleteOldest

C:\WINDOWS\system32>

By piping the output of the wbadmin get versions command into the find command, which I had count the number of occurrences of "Snapshot ID," I could see there were 67 backups on the drive.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>wbadmin get versions | find /C "Snapshot ID"
67

C:\WINDOWS\system32>

I deleted all but the last twelve backups. At first, I used WBADMIN DELETE BACKUP -keepVersions:12, but since it appeared I would be prompted to delete each of the older backups I wished to eliminate, I used Ctrl-C to interrupt the delete operation and then added the -quiet option to avoid being prompted for the deletion of backups.

You can use the Windows Task Scheduler command schtasks /query to display the list of all scheduled tasks. When I checked on when the next backup was scheduled to run by filtering the output of that command with the find command by searching for "AutomaticBackup", I saw it was for 7:00 PM tomorrow, March 25 (the backups were scheduled to run every Sunday at 7:00 PM).

C:\WINDOWS\system32>schtasks /query | find "AutomaticBackup"

To configure a Windows 10 system to run or check on the Windows 7 style image backups, you can take the following steps:

  1. Right-click on the Start button.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click on Update & Security.
  4. Click on Backup on the left side of the Window.

    Windows Update - Backup

  5. On the Backup window, click on "Go to Backup and Restore (Windows 7)"

    Backup window

You should then see the Backup and Restore window. In this case I can see the next scheduled backup time, the location of the backups, the last backup date and time as well as the total capacity and free space on the backup drive.
