Removing LocalNRD

The November 1, 2004 update to Bazooka Scanner allows it to detect LocalNRD, an adware component.

The LocalNRD developer states on its webapge that "LOCALNRD is a software development company. We have developed a series of ad targeting applications such as LOCALNRD.dll that help advertisers deliver targeted ads. In addition to our software development, we also provide certain support services to the distributors of our software." Other than a contact form, there is nothing else on the developer's website, so there is no way to determine from the developer's site what this software does or how to remove it.

You can remove it by following instructions Kephyr provides at http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/library/localnrd/ or by following the instructions below. If you see a LocalNRD entry under "Add/Remove Programs" (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs), you can remove it that way. If you don't see any entry for LocalNRD under "Add/Remove Programs" or you prefer not to use the vendor's uninstall routine, you can remove it by the following steps:

  1. Download LocalNRD-Registry-Removal.reg and Local-NRD-File-Removal.bat.

  2. Start your computer in Safe Mode.

  3. Double-click on the LocalNRD-Registry-Removal file you just downloaded to remove the LocalNRD entries in the registry. When asked "Are you sure you want to add the information in LOCALN~1.REG to the registry?", click on "Yes". You will then see "Information in LOCALN~1.REG has been successfully entered into the registry." Click on OK

    The following registry enries, if found, will be deleted:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD}

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD}

  4. Double-click on the Local-NRD-File-Removal batch file you downloaded to delete the dll file associated with LocalNRD.
    The following file, if found, will be deleted:

    %WinDir%\localNRD.dll

    Note: %WinDir% is a variable. By default, this is C:\Windows (Windows 95/98/Me/XP) or C:\WINNT (Windows NT/2000).

  5. Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools, then Internet Options. Select the Programs tab and select Reset Web Settings.

  6. Click on OK

  7. Restart your computer.

If you wish to examine the file, you can download localNRD.dll.
