Monitoring network performance on an OS X system

The Network Utility application can be found in the Applications/Utilities folder on a Mac OS X system. Under the Info tab, you can select the network interface you wish to check or monitor, e.g., a wired or wireless interface. In the example below, the Wi-Fi interface, en1, is selected.

The "Info" display shows the IP address, link speed for the interface, the packets sent and received on the interface as well as the send and receive errors and collisions on the interface.

The Netstat tab shows information similar to what you would see if you issued the netstat command at a shell prompt. The Ping tab provides you with the capability to send a specified or unlimited number of pings to an IP address or fully qualified domain name.

The Activity Monitor found in the Applications/Utilities folder can also provide some information on the network utilization, such as the current bandwidth being used, if you click on the Network tab at the bottom of the window.
