Changing the Default Font Size for Outlook 2010

Microsoft's Outlook 2010 uses a default font, such as Calibri with a font size of 11, when you compose email messages. You can determine the default font and its size when you are composing a message by looking at the area below the Message tab as shown in the example below where the font is Calibri and the font size is 11.

If you wish to change the default font, e.g., if you prefer a larger font size to make messages easier to read when you are composing messages you can change the default font in Outlook 2010 by takng the following steps within Outlook:
  1. Click on File at the upper left-hand corner of the Outlook window.
  2. Select Options.

  6. In the Font selection window that will then open, you can choose which font you wish to use, its style, and size. If you just want to increase the font size for the default font, scroll down through the font list until you find the existing default font, e.g. Calibri. Then, under Size, increase the font size. E.g., you could increase the font size from 11 to 14. When you pick another number, you will see the size of the font change in the Preview section of the window allowing you to see how the new font selected will appear in your messages.

  7. When you are satisfied with your font selection, click on the OK button.
  8. You may also want to make the same change for the font used when you are replying to or forwarding messages others have sent you. If so, click on the Font button below "Replying or forwarding messages" and follow the same font selection process.

You can also make a similar change by clicking on the Font button under "Composing and reading plain text messages" for changing the font used for "plain text" messages. Most people will be using HTML, which allows one to specify colors, bold, italic, etc for text when composing messages, but you can also change the setting here for plain text messages by following a similar process. So, if the default font size is too small for you, I'd suggest changing it here as well.
  9. When you are satisfied with the fonts for composing, forwarding, and replying, click on the OK button on the Signatures and Stationery window to close it.
