Turning airplane mode on and off under Windows 8
Windows 8 provides an
airplane mode setting for wireless connectivity for devices. When a device
is placed in airplane mode, many of the device's signal transmitting functions
are suspended, disabling the device's capacity to place or receive calls or use
text messaging, but still permitting use of other functions that do not require
signal transmission, such as using the devices camera, MP3 player, etc.
The setting is called "airplane mode" because it permits the user to operate
the device while on board a commercial aircraft while in flight, where the
operation of cell phones and other devices that send or receive signals may
be prohibited due to the belief that the signals can potentially impact
aircraft avionics or interfere with ground cell networks.
To toggle "airplane mode" on and off in Windows 8, you can take the following
steps:
-
Open the Charms menu by hitting the
Windows key and C keys simultaneously or by swiping a finger from the
right side of the screen towards the left side, if you have a touchscreen.
-
Select Settings.
-
Select Airplane mode.
-
Move the slider left or right to turn airplane mode off or on.
