Creating a Windows 8 System Repair Disc

The steps to create a Windows 8 System Repair Disc are as follows:
  1. At the Windows 8 start screen, type Control Panel to locate the Control Panel, then click on it to start it.
  2. Click on System and Security.
  3. Click on File History.
  4. Click on "Windows 7 File Recovery", which you will find near the bottom, left-hand portion of the window. Yes, even though you are using a Windows 8 system, that is what you will use to create the Windows 8 recovery disc, which is similar to the one used in Windows 7, though you should only use a Windows 7 repair disc with a Windows 7 system, a Windows 8 repair disc with a Windows 8 system, and a Windows 8.1 repair disc with a Windows 8.1 system. If you boot a system with Windows 8 installed on the hard drive with a Windows 7 repair disc, expect to see the message "This version of System Recovery Optoins is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows."

    Also, if you create a system repair disc on a 64-bit Windows system, you won't be able to use it on a 32-bit system - see How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system, if you don't know which version is on a system.

    Windows 7 File Recovery

    Note: the "Windows 7 File Recovery" option doesn't appear on the File History window for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 doesn't provide an easy means to create a repair disc, though you can create a recovery disk on a USB thumbdrive and from that create an ISO file that can be used to create a repair disc.

  5. Click on "Create a system repair disc".

  6. You will then be prompted to select a CD/DVD drive in the system. If you have only one DVD drive in the system, there will be a drop-down list with only one drive shown.

  7. Place a blank CD or DVD in the drive and click on the "Create disc" button. A CD will suffice to hold all of the files that will be placed on the repair disc.
  8. When the repair disc has been created, you will see a "Using the system repair disc" window where you will be informed that "You can use the system repair disc to access system recovery options that can help you recover your computer from a serious error." If you've created a repair disc on a 64-bit Microsoft Windows system, you will be informed to label the disc "Repair disc Windows 8 64-bit"; you should identify the version of Windows and whether is is a 32 or 64-bit repair disc on the label you put on the disc. It may also be helpful later to know the system it was created on and the date it was created.
