avast! IE 9 Stopped Working

On a Windows 7 Professional system with avast! Free Antivirus, with Internet Explorer 9 open, I was repeatedly seeing windows pop up with the message "Internet Explorer has stopped working".

Internet Explorer has stopped
working

When I clicked on "View problem details", I saw the problem was associated with aswWebRepIE.dll, which was listed for "Fault Module Name".

Clicking on "Close the program" would simply result in the error window closing and reappearing.

At an avast! Forum site, at aswWebRepIE.dll crashes IE9 I found a July 24, 2012 posting indicating the problem was known and should be corrected in a future update. The advice given was "Why dont you just disable Webrep until the problem is fixed ( which shouldn't be to far away i believe ), it's not such a big deal" The problem is also noted at Internet Explorer has stopped working - problem with aswWebRepIE.dll? where a solution of inactivating the plugin in IE9 is listed. To implement that solution, you can take the following steps:

  1. Click on the gear icon at the upper right-hand corner of the Internet Explorer 9 window
  2. Select Internet Options.
  3. Click on the Manage add-ons button.
  4. Under Toolbars and Extensions, you will see an Avast Software section with avast! WebRep listed.

    Internet Explorer Avast software

Right click on an instance of avast! WebRep and choose Disable.

    Internet Explorer avast WebRep disabled

  5. Click on the Close button and then OK.

That seemed to resolve the problem after I closed and reopened Internet Explorer.
