United States Presidents' Political Parties

Learning that lasts. Online courses from $14.99

The poltical parties to which America's presidents have belonged while holding the office of the Presidency of the United States (POTUS). The party party affiliation of some presidents changed while they were in office, e.g., Abraham Lincoln was a Republican when he was first elected to office, but ran under the National Union Party ticket when he sought re-election in 1864 during the Civil War—that party name was used to attract Democratic and Unionist Party members who did not want to vote for a Republican Party candidate. John Tyler was a Whig when he became president in 1841 at the death of President William Henry Harrison, who died in office one month taking the oath of office, but he was expelled by the party that same year after disagreements with the party's leadership.
